Door Games

What Are Door Games?

Door games are multiplayer text-based games that ran on BBSes in the late '80s and '90s. You'd dial in, pick a game from the menu, and play a few turns each day. They were the original "daily login" games — before mobile games existed, before the web existed. We run ours on real DOS inside virtual machines, just like the old days.

InterDoor — Federated Text Games

Beyond the classic door games above, Dead Parrot is a gateway to InterDoor: a federated network of modern text games hosted across independent boards. From the doors menu inside the BBS you can browse the live directory and drop straight into a game on another node — no separate account needed.

One of the headline games on the network is Ledger of the Low, a sprawling text RPG in the grand BBS tradition. The InterDoor lineup grows as more boards join the network.

Where to find it: connect to the BBS (ssh -p 4000 bbs.deadparrotbbs.com), open the Door Games menu, and choose InterDoor.

How to Play the Registered Games

The classic door games run on a separate game server you reach with any telnet-capable BBS client:

Host: 72.209.157.190
Port: 2324
Protocol: Telnet
  1. Connect

Point a client (SyncTERM, NetRunner, mTelnet, or plain telnet) at 72.209.157.190 port 2324. You'll land on the game server login screen.

  2. Create an Account

First time? Type new at the login prompt to create an account. Pick a handle and password.

  3. Pick a Game

You'll see the door games menu. Pick a game and play your turns. Most games are turn-based — play a few minutes each day.
